But don't take these chummy dentist-patient relationships for granted. "We treat them like friends or family members. They don't feel like we're playing God," says Lowenberg, the older, more talkative half of the tan, wel-coiffured duo. "All people have basic fears about going to the dentist, even celebrities." Defying most stereotypes of the classic dentists, Lowenberg and Lituchy describe themselves as artist. "I paint smiles," says Lituchy, a former music student. And although snazzy porcelain veneers can run as high as $30,000 for a full set of chompers, it might be a small price to pay for a renewed sense of youth and beauty. "When they take that first look in the mirror, it makes me the happiest," explains Lowenberg. "It's a tremendous feeling to improve somebody's self-esteem." Lowenberg's
own lot in the business world has improved since opening his practice
in 1973, back when Keith Richards' entourage would camp out in the office
while the Rolling Stones guitarist had his pearly whites polished. For
one, bonding technology introduced in the last decade revolutionized the
way folks can deal with unattractive teeth. And Lituchy brought a whole
new set of mouths from the fashion world when he signed on in 1985. |
